Artists' books : a private collection

Although Maria has only relatively recently come to think of her accumulation of artists’ books as a collection, she has acquired artists’ books for over 25 years. She purchases artists’ books mainly at fairs such as Turn the page, Small Publishers Fair and PAGES: International Contemporary Artist’s Book Fair.

Books provide a very special space, and Maria is interested the ways that artists investigate the book form, exploring its nature and its materials. This talk will take an overview of Maria’s collection then look at individual books to illustrate aspects of artists’ books that interest Maria.



Maria White first met artists’ books while working at the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She went on to work with and then manage the artists’ books collection at Tate Library. She purchased for and catalogued the Tate collection. Also leading group visits to the collection and curating displays in the Library showcases. She co-curated with Cathy Courtney the 1995 exhibition of artists’ books held at Tate Britain. She has given talks about artists’ books and led workshops on cataloguing artists’ books. Essence Press has published 4 artists’ books by Maria.
